In this article I wont to explain how to add item class < li class=item1 >, < li class=" item2 " >, ..., < li class=" item28 " >, to the top menu, for customizing current link:

1. Login to Joomla admin panel: www.YourSiteName.com/administrator/
2. Mouse over on Extensions horizontal menu, then click on Module Manager.
   
3. Click on Top Menu Module Name
   
4. In Module Parameters -> Menu Style dropdown menu, select List. Then Press Save
   

Thats it, now you can customize each menu link class.
